Navigation with menus are important in every website. It’s one of the key element that you need to take note for a fully functional and comprehensible site. But do you know how to make menus, add navigation, and customize it? In this tutorial, we will teach you how to add menus and customize it.

WordPress comes with drag and drop menu interface that you can use to create header menus, menus with dropdown options, and more. In this step by step guide, we will show you how to easily add a navigation menu in WordPress. But first we need to know what is a Navigation Menu.

A navigation menu is a list of links that redirects to different post or pages of your site. They are usually the horizontal bar of links at the top of every page on your site. Navigation menu gives site the structure and helps guests to easily find what they’re looking for.

Now a days, WordPress makes everything easy specially adding menus and sub-menus. You can add links to almost everything you put in your site, examples important pages, topics or categories, blogs, pages, and can create customer links that redirect to your social media accounts. Navigation menu location will depend on the theme you picked, sometimes they are located at the bottom or top and even side menu. But most themes offer versatile menu location that you can pick depending on your taste. For example, WordPress themes comes with primary menu which appears at the top most area of your site, some also has secondary menu and even footer menu – it also comes with menu compatible for mobile navigation.

1. Login to your site WP admin area: yoursitename.com/wp-admin/

2. Select Appearance panel then Menus.

3. Provide a menu name and click on Create Menu button. This will expand the menu area and will give you more options to fill the links you need for that menu.

4. You can see the Pages area in left side of the image, they are the list of your pages that you created. They are divided into 3 tabs, click View All to see all the pages. 

You will also notice the different portions where the Pages menu item is located. You can pick to add either Pages, Posts, Custom Links, and Categories so feel free to explore them.

Pages, this is the area where all created pages are located.
Posts, this is the area where all created posts are located.
Custom Links, when you click this area it will give you fields where you can enter the URL and the Name of the URL you created. Custom links are necessary when you need to add external links example Facebook profile page.
Categories, this is the area where all created categories are located.

Choose the items you want to add in the menu. You can Select All or check the specific pages. After choosing pages, click the Add to Menu button. The pages will automatically displayed menu area, please refer to the red arrow to see where the pages land.

5. You can sort the pages by dragging and dropping them.

6. You can also add sub-menu to your menu. Please see the gif file on the right most side. Just drag it to right side of the menu you want to add. You will notice the indention when you successfully added a sub menu to your menu.

6. Modify the Menu Setting after you finalized everything. Display location is where your menu will be located.

7. Click Save Menu.

You can be versatile and style your site a little more. You don’t have to stick to the display location of menu based on your theme. You can add navigation menu in any area that uses widgets. Please continue reading to know more about this process.

3. Choose Navigation Menu under Available Widgets.

4. Click arrow down, it will list the available location where you can add widgets. In this theme, you can add widgets either on footer 1 or footer 2. Some themes will have sidebar area where you can put the widget navigation menu. Going back to the Navigation Menu widget, you need to choose which area you will add the widget then click Add Widget or you can drag and drop the widget going to Footer #1 or Footer #2.

5. Add Title for you navigation menu. And in the dropdown menu pick the Menu that will appear in your footer. The Select Menu contains the menu you previously created above. Pick one then press Done and Saved.
